Viva Las Vegas – the official 50th Anniversary Star Trek convention

To boldly go…. As the saying from the opening of Star Trek goes and I’ve certainly done my fair share of that this year. Lots of new places visited, maybe not always so boldly but they’ve been great experiences and I’ve just had another with a big trip to Las Vegas for the Official 50th Anniversary Star Trek Convention considered by many to be THE event of the year to celebrate the franchise. I’ve heard a lot about it from friends who have been before, wanted to try it and what better year than the 50th Anniversary plus a chance to see somewhere else completely new. (more…)

Going Rogue – a Prophecy fulfilled

As you may or may not know there are many conventions throughout the year themed around a wide variety of current and past TV shows and run by a number of different organisers. I’ve been attending events for a long time but one of the few UK conventions I’ve not done is one run by Rogue Events.

There are a number of reasons for this. For one, they don’t run events based around shows I watch and for another I’ve heard many stories about how badly they are run which has put me off. But then they go and announce an event called Prophecy based around the TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer and it’s offshoot, Angel. On top of this they announce Alyson Hannigan as one of the guests. A very rare appearance and with a couple of other guests I hadn’t met I was persuaded to buy a ticket. So how did it go? (more…)

Meeting the Man on the Moon

I have just attended only my second ever book signing event. Possibly a bit surprisingly given the number of other signing events I go to but book signings are often midweek, during the day and just not possible for me to get to most of the time. I say second but I’m not really counting the time Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden put a book out and I got that signed as I was really getting the album signed, the book was a silly extra and really not very good.

The first proper one I did was in 2014 for Gillian Anderson which was a fun event with friends and I wrote about that in the article A Vision of Fire. So whose appearance dragged me out to one this time? (more…)

Rediscovering MCM Comic Con – London

I’ll just put this out there. I haven’t attended an MCM event in London since October 2003. At that time it was in just one of the smaller halls at the Excel and you could circle the entire space in a few of minutes. I had just started attending signing events and went to meet Emma Caulfield and Julie Benz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer plus Garrett Wang and Tim Russ from Star Trek: Voyager.

Not particularly sure why I didn’t go to more afterwards, money was always an issue back then, other events seemed to get more of the guests I was interested in and the focus of MCM seemed to move towards Anime and Manga which is not a huge interest of mine. Then as it got bigger came the reports of how badly organised it was, too many people, difficult to get what you wanted etc which put me off even more.

I did once go down to meet some friends while I was at another event and even just hanging around it felt chaotic and far too busy. So why go now? (more…)

New Year – Exciting times ahead

Another year starts. Welcome to 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. I’ll start by admitting I’ve not done as much updating to this blog as I thought I would, mostly because it doesn’t have a particular theme, I’ve been busy and not had anything I’ve felt the need to really write about but lets start with a bit of a roundup.

Since my last post in October there have been multiple convention trips involving mad journeys just for the day to Cardiff and Brighton, which were actually two of the most fun days of the year (more…)
