Roadtrip – Two conventions, some Lakes and some Mountains

This week has been time off work. Normally it’s just an annual trip to the Lake District which is in the Northwest of England for those unfamiliar with it. After the disaster that was last year, due to the other issues I was dealing with, I was looking forward to this and decided to combine it with a visit to a Convention with friends at the start of the week which was sort of on the way.

And, as often happens at the last minute, some guests from the TV show The Waking Dead were announced for an event in Birmingham on the second weekend of my break. A friend really wanted to meet them and as there were a couple of people I was interested in seeing too I said I’d drive back from the Lake District on the Friday and drive up to Birmingham on the Saturday morning.

So first up was a drive to Nottingham for Em-Con. (more…)

What price is too high?

How much would you be prepared to pay to see your favourite band or singer? Would you buy a ticket just to resell it for an exorbitant price? Have you paid vastly inflated prices for a ticket just so you don’t miss out?

It’s a topic that has been argued time and again but once more has reared it’s head. This week came the surprise announcement that David Gilmour was going to do a short tour. He is my favourite guitarist from one of my favourite bands (Pink Floyd if you didn’t know) and I didn’t expect to have the opportunity to see him again.

I was lucky enough to see his last solo tour in 2006 and knowing he’s not a big fan of touring anymore I expected that to be the last time. (more…)

Silver linings from Dark clouds

In about two weeks time it will be a year since I had my breakdown and was signed off work. I have no intention of marking this as some kind of anniversary as although it’s something I’ve learned from it’s definitely not something I want to dwell on and relive, hence why I’m writing now rather than in two weeks time.

Things have changed so much I feel ready to put the last year behind me and move positively forward, (more…)

Good shows, bad shows, when do you stop watching?

What makes a good TV show? Why do we watch the ones we do? More importantly how long do you give a new show a chance to make an impression?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself after becoming bored with a few shows I’ve had on my watch list and deciding not to continue with. After tweeting that one show had become very slow and tedious, a friend quite rightly said “stop watching it then”. I’d got so far with it but really started to ask myself why I was still watching. Was it the investment in time I’d already made making me carry on just to see if it improved? (more…)

Ever Played an Instrument?

I was talking to someone recently and realised how long it’s been since I picked up my guitars. And I find this quite sad.

I’m sure many of you will have had uncomfortable forced piano lessons when young  or had to join in with something at school, even if it was just banging a drum or hitting a triangle. That always seemed to be what I ended up with and don’t think I showed much prowess even at that.

I never had any great musical interest or skill but then something happened. I discovered the music that struck the proverbial chord with me (no pun intended). (more…)
